1.21.12 – Ohio University vs. Miami University

So this year’s OU-Miami game was being billed as one of the biggest in Convocation Center history and it did not disappoint. The Bobcats were able to pull out the tight, come from behind victory in the last seconds in front of one of the largest crowds in Convo history. Add that to a jersey retiring for the “Shaq of the Mac” Gary Trent and the always electric atmosphere whenever Miami comes into town and it will go down as one of the most memorable games I’ve ever shot in the Convo.

1.11.12 – Ohio University vs. Buffalo

Ohio beat the Bulls this past week in a pretty emotional game to bounce back from their loss to Robert Morris. I’m getting to that point in the basketball season where finding different frames is becoming more and more difficult. So, I’ve been trying to focus more moments which has always been a bit of a struggle for me, especially in basketball, but it’s always nice to have something you’re working towards improving.

The new year started on a disappointing, albeit exciting note for the Bobcats basketball team as they lost a heart breaker to Robert Morris at the Convo. The Cats staged a furious comeback in the last few minutes, but were unable to pull out the victory as D.J. Cooper’s fadeaway from the corner (last frame) clanked off the rim.

End of the Year: Sports

I really enjoy end of the year lists, best songs, best movies, worst TV shows, etc. Furthermore I think that digging back through my archives from the past year helps me to take one big look at the work I’ve been doing as a whole. During slow parts of the year I’m usually shooting about every couple of days, but during the busy times (especially during internships) I end up shooting up to 4 assignments a day, so to say that things can pile up and that I start to look over images or trends in my shooting is a bit of an understatement. So going through an entire year’s worth of photos forces me to take a good look in the photographic mirror, and allows me to set some goals for the next year heading forward. Therefore I’ll spare you the numerous shots that make me want to cringe and share with you my favorites from this past year’s sports photos, though I’m usually my own worst editor so I’m sure I still missed something.

12.13.11 – Federal Hocking-Eastern

A few days before leaving Athens for the holidays I shot a pretty intense high school basketball game between conference rivals Federal Hocking and Eastern. The game was especially intense because it was the first meeting between the two schools after Eastern’s head coach of 13 years transferred over to coach Federal Hocking this year. The crowd was about evenly split between Eagle and Lancer fans and the game ended up living up to the fever pitch both sides brought. Federal Hocking was able to pull off the win thanks to a last second, buzzer beating lay in by Federal Hocking’s star center Chris Saylor.

12.10.11 Ohio University – Appalachian State Wrestling

I don’t often get to shoot wrestling so it was nice to have the opportunity to shoot OU’s match against Appalachian State the other day. Since I don’t often get to shoot wrestling it’s a little hard for me to know what exactly makes a good frame or what’s just par for the course with this particular sport, but I guess that’s half the fun of shooting unfamiliar subjects.

11.30.11 – Ohio University vs Marshall

I traveled to Marshall with my buddy Joel a few days ago to shoot OU’s game against our former conference rival. Both teams look to be solid mid major contenders this year and OU was able to stave off a late charge by the Thundering Herd to clinch a victory and improve to 6-1 (now 7-1) on the season thus far.

Battle of the Bricks: Ohio vs. Miami 11.22.11

Two days before Thanksgiving OU played Miami in the annual Battle of the Bricks game. OU cemented its place as the top team in the MAC East and got it’s tenth win of the season while beating Miami for the sixth year running.

10.28.11 – Nelsonville at Athens – “The Game of the Century”

So while this upcoming weekend might be the collegiate “Game of the Century” with top ranked Bama and LSU meeting in a regular season clash of SEC titans Athens County had its own game of the century this past Friday when unbeaten Athens and Nelsonville-York squared off in what was arguably the most hyped game in the history of the county. For me, the most amazing part was that the game actually ended up living up to the hype. While it may have been a sloppy game (i.e. about 12-13 turnovers and a penalty on seemingly every other play) it was still about as dramatic of a high school game as I’ve ever seen. It came down to overtime and Athens was able to kick a field goal (the last two meetings between these teams were decided by missed PATs by Athens) to claim their first outright conference championship and beat heavily favored Nelsonville. Instant classic.

Ohio University vs. Ball State – 10.16.11

A few weeks ago the season was looking so promising for our football team. 4-1 and heading into what should have been an easy stretch of MAC games that should have lead to a key match up at the beginning of November with a very good Temple team that will (hopefully still) be broadcast on ESPN. However, now we find ourselves just one game above .500 after two disappointing losses to Buffalo (an away game) and most recently Ball State. Not only was the game disappointing because of the outcome, but it also lacked any really great action for shooting. But that’s the way sports can be sometimes and the photo gods made up for it with some beautiful light during the second half. Because the action was pretty light and the light was getting super sexy I decided to go up to the roof to get a different perspective so that’s why there’s alot of shots from up top.
