March 2-4, 2012: Arnold Sports Festival
So, I’ve been meaning to get this post up for awhile now, but the madness of March took over and has delayed it well into April. But anyways, as I’ve mentioned in previous posts I once again covered the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus this year with a talented group of friends. Having covered the event before provided both valuable experience to make the weekend go much smoother than last year, and also made for new challenges in seeing different pictures from last year. This can be difficult because alot of these events are not something that I’ve ever shot besides for at this time last year. Therefore it was a weird paradox of seeing something almost for the first time, but then having to fight the instinct to make certain pictures because you’ve actually made them before. Bodybuilding and figure were probably the sports that were made most difficult because of this.
But of course these are some of the main events of the weekend and so we cover them fairly extensively. However, they’re also fun because of how profile they are compared to some of the other events (yes that is A.C. Slater and Arnold in the same photo below, check that one off the bucket list).
But of course these aren’t the only events going on this weekend. Below are some of my favorite shots from the Expo (craziness), ball room dancing, power lifting, archery, arm wrestling, etc, etc, etc.
One of my surprise favorite events to shoot was the deadlifting finals, thanks in large part to two of my favorite stories I stumbled upon. First is Carlos Greene, (immediately below) a blind power lifter from Trinidad and Tobago who works as a motivational speaker back on his home island when he is not competing. And Ian Bell (second below) who is a 19 year old phenom in the sport and lifted almost 900 pounds at the event which was a record for his age.
Then of course there is cheerleading which is always one of my favorite sports to shoot because the beautiful light in the grand ballroom is always so well done and let’s face it, nobody gives better reactions to winning a trophy then these cheerleaders.
All in all it was another great year covering the Arnold and a little bittersweet because it might be the last chance I get to shoot the event for a while. But, be sure to check out the work my fellow shooters Joel, Alex, and Susannah. They all pretty much slayed it hard and I couldn’t have been prouder of the work that everyone came up with and of course it wouldn’t have been possible without the help from our amazing card runners, editors and boss for the weekend, so a big thanks to Maddie, Erin, Emily, Rob, Erica, and of course Dave.
